When Bellamy got to the office the next morning, she cleared her schedule of meetings and spent the day in financials. Kendra’s lack of response to her accusation that there might be more than sexual harassment to report scared her. Before Kendra had a chance to hide anything, she copied everything to an external hard drive, changed passwords, and then settled in to really look through it all.

It didn’t take her long to find inconsistencies. All she had to do was go back a couple weeks to when Kendra had gone to Cabo San Lucas, a trip which ostensibly was a business trip. Bellamy grunted her half-surprise and half-idiocy before rolling her eyes. She had been such an idiot, so blinded to what was happening because she was too damn scared to stir the pot. She was going to have to go through all ten years of financial records to figure out just how much Kendra had embezzled.

Her eyes should have been opened ages ago. Rubbing her temples, Bellamy let out a sad sigh. She’d buried her head, let it happen, let it fester as she purposely ignored it. She didn’t want to think Kendra was capable of being such an awful person. She wanted to think she made better decisions than that in her life. They made good income. Kendra could have had just about everything she wanted, especially if she herself had put a little more effort into working for it.

As soon as it was late enough in the morning, Bellamy made a phone call to a financial investigator and auditor. She needed another set of eyes on their records. She needed to know how bad it was and how much trouble she herself was going to be in from not catching it any sooner.

Payton came into the office at her normal time, the door opening and closing outside. She started up the music that was always present when she was around. Bellamy stood up and moved to the entryway out into the lobby. She leaned against the wall, her shoulder holding her up. Taking off her reading glasses, she dangled them between her fingers as she stared at Payton’s back.

A smile lingered on her lips, memories of the night before flashing through her mind, plus all the moments they had managed to steal here and there to touch, to flirt, to be together when they really weren’t. Payton was so young, but she had reminded Bellamy of all the dreams she’d once had, of the confidence she’d once had in herself and her own abilities.

“Payton,” her voice sounded tired but she felt anything but. “Can I talk to you a minute?”

Payton turned and nodded. “Sure.”

Bellamy didn’t wait as she headed into her office. As soon as Payton was inside, she shut the door and moved to sit in one of the two chairs at the far end of her desk where clients usually sat. She slipped into the chair, crossed her legs and settled her glasses on her thigh.
